Types and Differences of Lithium Batteries

With the progress and development of society, people need more and more energy. As a device that stores electrical energy in the form of chemical energy, the battery is very important in our life. This article is about the types and differences of lithium batteries.

Types and Differences of Lithium Batteries

Classified by internal material

  1. Lithium metal battery: The lithium metal battery usually uses manganese oxide as the positive material, lithium metal or an alloy as the negative material, and a non-aqueous electrolyte solution.
  2. Lithium-ion battery: The lithium-ion battery usually uses lithium alloy metal oxide as the positive material, graphite as the negative material and a non-aqueous electrolyte.

Classified by positive and negative electrode materials

  1. Lithium iron phosphate battery: Lithium phosphate has good electrochemical performance and low resistance. The main advantages are high rated currents and long cycle life; good thermal stability, increased safety and tolerance to abuse. When operated for long periods at high voltage, lithium phosphate is more resilient to all charging conditions and exhibits less stress than other lithium-ion systems.
  2. Lithium cobalt oxide battery: Its high specific energy makes lithium cobalt oxide a popular choice for mobile phones, laptops and digital cameras. The battery consists of a cobalt oxide cathode and a graphite anode. The cathode has a layered structure. During discharge, lithium ions move from the anode to the cathode, and the flow is reversed during charging.
  3. Lithium manganate battery: The lithium manganate battery can be discharged at a current of 20-30 A and has moderate heat accumulation. Load pulses of up to 50 s can also be applied. Continuous high load at this current will result in heat accumulation, and the battery temperature must not exceed 80 °C (176 °F). Lithium manganate is used in power tools, medical devices, and hybrid and pure electric vehicles.

Classified by case material

  1. First type - steel case battery: As the name suggests, this is a battery whose case is made of steel.
  2. Second type – aluminum case battery: Similar, the case is made of aluminum.
  3. Third type - Polymer battery: The case is made of a polymer material, usually silver in color. Some manufacturers make it black, which is now common in the industry.
